I LOVE shaping surfboards and I'm kinda obsessed with this craft. Even though I am about to shape my 243th board I'm still considering myself as a novice but I hope to become a master one day... This blog is a virtual portfolio and a diary of my journey in the shaping world. Feel free to leave comments or contact me directly at valerie@meremadesurfboards.com.

board#066: shortboard for Robert (and Catwoman!)

Rob is holding his gift board from Lily and her parents!

Dimensions: 5'9 x 19 1/2 x 2 1/2
[completed in October 2014]
V-Land model

The story: This story is pretty unique and neat. One day I get an email from a friend of mine requesting a custom surfboard for…her daughter's teacher… ??? The board would be a parent-to-teacher gift to tell him how much they appreciate all the good work and progress made during the year Lily was in his class. Isn't it like a teacher's fairy tale??? So, I got in touch with Robert (the teacher) and he was, of course, delighted to get a custom board for free (you bet!). Then I realized he is not only a neighbor (he walked to my house) and a surf comrade (he surfs the same spot as me!). Encinitas is such a small world!

The shape: Robert studied my blog and picked the V-Land model I created for Sam (board#015). I agreed it would be perfect for our home spot and we modified few dimensions to accommodate to Robert's tastes. I also added a bit more rocker than on the previous V-Land to make it more permissive on steeper waves.

The artwork: Robert suggested some very simple black rails (probably because the original V-land also had black rails!) but as usual I got carried away by my imagination. I really liked the metal patches with fake screws that look like steal plates I just made on board#064. I decided to surprise Rob with some plates additions on the rails. The finish is classic and cool at the same time. But the best part, to me, is the little drawing that Lily made for her teacher on the tail…
(Global Glassing is behind the wonderful glass as usual)

How cute is Lily's little sun???!!!

The board just got back from the glass shop on Halloween day and I was Catwoman that night…
A steal plate board was the perfect accessory for a superhero photo shoot :)
